We're pretty much playing this one by ear.
BATTLE
The goal is, when engaging in battle, to be as realistic as possible, but maintain safety at all times. Accidents happen, of course, but be reasonable. Remember, you're not actually gonna be killing anyone, so don't go in swingin' like a madman.
* No strikes or thrusts to the face or eyes will be permitted.
* No strikes or thrusts to the neck or throat will be permitted.
* Head strikes ARE acceptable, but use caution. Use OVERHEAD STRIKES ONLY, don't go for the temples.
* No strikes or thrusts to the groin area will be permitted. If you're gonna go low, go for the knees or shins.
CLASSES
As with most computer and classic-styled RPGs, there are several classes of characters to choose from. They are:
1. Rogue - Assassin; Barbarian; Mercenary.
2. Priest - High Priest; Monk; Shaman.
3. Soldier - Archer; Infantryman; Knight; Pikeman.
ROGUE[/u]
As a rogue, you're freedom is nearly unsurpassed. You're a wanderer, so there's no set-in-stone "look" for you. You're a man of all trades and are swift of mind and blade. You can survive the harshest winters, the most scorching deserts... you are prepared for anything and everything. You serve no man and will die with your god before you let any man get the better of you. Whether searching for adventure, gold or travel, you'll find it. You'll go wherever the wind and your will may take you. Don't let yourself stand out, however. When in a foreign land, try to look the part. Blend in... don't get noticed. Especially if you're a wanted man.
PRIEST
You're a holy man. Benevolent, wise and understanding. But don't be afraid to take up arms if you or those around you are in danger. Every city and village needs a priest. Whether Monk or Shaman, you're the person your people turn to when they seek wisdom or help from whatever gods they worship. In times of war, kings call upon you to advise them. Are the gods in your King's favor? Will they strike down upon your enemies? Your "look" is only determined by the country you're from (Cimmeria; Stygia) and limited only by what god you worship.
SOLDIER
Loyal to your king, you'll fight for your bretheren and your country until there's no more fight left in you. You're a highly trained, highly motivated killing machine (especially an infantryman) who will stop at nothing to see the battle won and will run any scourge through who dares march on your homeland to claim it as his own. As an archer (especially Aquilonian), your aim is true and you always find a target. As a knight, your nobility is second only to your fighting prowess. The look of a soldier is (again) determined by his country of origin. Greek/Roman for Aquilonian/Argossean, etc.
* Mages/Sorcerers are ommitted, as there is not a great deal of magic in Hyboria. Any of it is almost purely elemental. Sorcerers, etc. conjure demons and beasts, cause mountains to crumble, bring back the dead, etc. There's no staffs, wands or pointy hats and (to be honest), a guy running around throwing things out of a pouch and yelling "Lightning bolt! Lightning bolt!" is just... well, it's annoying.
DRESS
The best example of this is all throughout history. Robert E. Howard, creator of the Hyborian age, based all places and characters from examples in history. Vanaheim and Asgard are obviously inspired by the Nordic Vikings. To some extent, Cimmerians are, as well. Aquilonia, Argos, Nemedia and Zamora are influenced by the Greeks (Argos, mostly) and Romans (Aquilonia, Nemedia and Zamora)... so dress appropriately to your character's place of origin and its historical influence (i.e. Greek, Roman, Nordic, etc.).
It all depends on your class and what you intend to do in that class. As a Rogue (which encompasses Rangers, Barbarians and Assassins), you're limited only to whatever country your character happens to be passing through at the time or whoever your character feels like fighting for. It all depends on what you want to do and where you want to be.
We do have a few rules regarding the clothing, etc. while in character (below).
1. NO JEANS.
2. NO MODERN FOOTWEAR.
3. NO CARGO PANTS.
4. NO SHORTS.
5. NO BALL-CAPS.
6. NO MODERN CLOTHING.
Rule number two (2) includes athletic footwear (basketball shoes; cross-training shoes; running shoes; skate shoes; walking shoes, etc.), work boots... absolutely no modern footwear at all.
Rule number five (5) includes berets (as if anyone wore those, anyway); do-rags; skull caps; beanies; visors or any other modern-day headwear.
Obviously, we want you to feel at home and comfortable when you're not in character, so feel free to speak as you normally would during down-time. For convenience sake, however, it's probably best if you just come to the event already in your character's clothing/armor, etc.
More to come... stay tuned!
