Welcome to the Hyborian Live Action Role Playing of Corpus Christi (HLARPOCC)!
If you've ever read Rober E. Howard's stories of Conan the Cimmerian, you'll know right where to go. If you are unfamiliar with Conan and the land of Hyboria, here's some information that will help you better understand the Hyborian Age.
IT IS AN AGE OF MAN
"Between the years when the oceans drank Atlantis and the gleaming cities... there was an age undreamed of. When shining kingdoms lay spread across the world like blue mantles beneath the stars. Hither came Conan, the Cimmerian. Black-haired, sullen-eyed, sword in hand. To tread the jewled thrones of the Earth under his sandaled feet."
The Hyborian Age is a "Forgotten age", beginning somewhere between sinking of the city of Atlantis and history as we know it. The Hyborian age closely mirrors the world of the Bronze Age (3300 BC - 1200 BC). Since it is so long ago, but close enough to the time of Troy and other legendry of the time, there is tremendous potential to dress in the clothing and armor of nearly any human culture you like. Celtic, Greek, Mongolian, Roman, Viking, etc. The earlier in history you go (i.e. Messopotamia, Babylonian, etc.), the closer you'll get in appearance to the Hyborian lore.
WHAT YOU WON'T FIND IN HYBORIA
Some fans of fantasy will lament (others will rejoice), but there is NOT ONE Dwarf, Elf or Orc to be found in Hyboria. As it is a time of man, the human race battles one another and a mention of Dwarves, Elves or Orcs will cause the people of Hyboria to question your sanity. You will also not find any Hobbits, for that matter. Only man, woman and child.
WHAT YOU WILL FIND IN HYBORIA
Unfortunately, there are sorcerers and/or wizards. Some Necromancers, also. There are not many Necromaners, sorcerers or wizards, however. But If you choose not to take on the role of an ordinary man (Barbarian, Priest, Soldier, etc.), the role of wizard or sorcerer may be what you're looking for. The wizards of Hyboria do not look those which most fans of fantasy are used to seeing. You'll find no staffs, no long beards and no tall, pointy hats. Depending on where the wizard or sorcerer is from (Stygia, etc.), they typically dress in a fashion similar to their homeland.
Wizards and Sorcerers are the only existng Hyborian characters not available for role-play in our community.
Wizards and the like are not their own race, but humans who are schooled in black magic, etc. Sorcerers and wizards are often lumped into the same category in Hyboria because they're all roughly the same thing anyhow. The Hyborian wizard/sorcerer mostly conjure monsters or call upon nature to do their bidding and rely mostly on illusions and their art as means to defeat intruders or opponents.
You will also find, giant killer man-apes, giant snakes, giant spiders, Lions, Tigers and Bears (oh, my!) as well as other woodland/jungle/desert life. Also in Hyboria you will sometimes find giant bats or other unearthly creatures (typically conjured up by some wizard). Yeti are rumored to exist in the Northern Cimmerian mountains, near Ben Morgh.
Dragons exist in Hyboria, but not to any great extent and are not frequently seen in any of the original Conan stories by Robert E. Howard.
OUR GOAL
It is our goal to break into the Live Action Role Playing scene with something rarely done in American LARP communities. Our goal is to accurately portray and bring to life Robert E. Howard's Hyborian age... the age of Conan. We encourage you to read the following books from Del Rey:
1. The Coming of Conan the Cimmerian
This is a book featuring the first of Robert E. Howard's original Conan stories, written in the 1930s. Howard's first Conan story, The Phoenix on the Sword, takes place when Conan is king of Aquilonia and follows each successive Conan story in the order it was written. The other books do the same.
2. The Bloody Crown of Conan
This is a collection of Howard's two short novels (also called a novella), The People of the Black Circle and
A Witch Shall Be Born as well as the only Conan novel, The Hour of the Dragon. The artwork throughout this book is among my favorite and you can really get a feel for Hyboria.
3. The Conquering Sword of Conan
These are the last of Robert E. Howard's Conan stories before he committed suicide in 1936. The last original Conan stories include The Servants of Bit-Yakin, Beyond the Black River, The Black Stranger,
The Man-Eaters of Zamboula and Red Nails.
Having read all or at least most of Robert E. Howard's original stories, you'll better understand not just the world he created, but the Hyborian world we wish to bring to life. We aim to start small, at first. No need to bite off more than we can chew. We'd like to at least establish a costume/warfare organization. Once we get something firm established, we can begin organizing skirmishes or battles.
What we're looking to start long-term is South Texas' first official three-day event (or maybe longer, Crom willing) focusing solely on Robert E. Howard's Conan stories set in the Hyborian Age. Food, fur, leather and weapon merchants. We have our local smith, Kramer, who can do custom work for anyone who cares to don his mastery.
